Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gamma: Brainwave Frequencies Explained

November 1, 2026

Every guide to binaural beats throws around words like delta, theta and gamma. They are not mystical — they are just the names for how fast the electrical activity in your brain is cycling, measured in Hz. Once you know the five bands, choosing what to listen to becomes obvious.

What a brainwave band is

Your brain's neurons fire in rhythms. An EEG measures those rhythms as waves, and we group them into five bands by speed. Slower waves go with rest and sleep; faster waves go with alertness and thinking. The idea behind binaural beats is to gently nudge your brain toward a target band by having it follow a matching pulse.

The five bands

Delta — 0.5 to 4 Hz

Theta — 4 to 8 Hz

Alpha — 8 to 13 Hz

Beta — 13 to 30 Hz

Gamma — 30 to 100 Hz

A quick cheat sheet

Carrier frequency vs the beat

One distinction that trips people up: the band (delta, theta, etc.) is the slow beat your brain follows. The carrier is the actual pitch you hear — which is where numbers like 432 Hz and 528 Hz come in. A good soundscape sets both: a pleasant carrier tone, with the right brainwave beat riding on top. One sets the feel; the other sets the state.

How strong is the effect?

Brainwave entrainment is real but gentle. A 2019 meta-analysis of 22 studies found binaural beats can shift mood, anxiety and cognition toward the targeted direction, with effects that vary between people (Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019). Think of these bands as dials you can lean on, not switches that flip your brain on command.

The short version

Five bands, slow to fast: Delta (deep sleep), Theta (drowsy, meditative), Alpha (calm focus), Beta (active thinking), Gamma (sharp attention). Pick the band that matches your goal, give it 20–30 minutes on headphones, and let your brain drift toward it.

Ondara organizes every soundscape by exactly this — Sleep, Focus, Relax, Meditate and Healing frequencies — each tuned to the right band so you do not have to do the math.
